Once in a lecture when we were talking about facing the door, a woman blurted, “That’s not Chinese. That’s Italian!” Yes, what we are sharing with you is partly from Feng Shui, which originated in ancient China, but we’ve gone way beyond strict Feng Shui practices. The concept of Position of Power is crucial to concentrating in your work space.
When you are in your office, you need to be focused, productive, and creative. You want to be so in your flow state that if someone came into your office, you’d be startled. But you say, “I’m a grownup, I can handle being startled.” And we agree that it’s not the end of the world and you would quickly recover and regain you focus; but all those little interruptions can add up in a day. You don’t recognize the mounting stress until it’s too late.
What if you can’t arrange your workspace so that you are in a Position of Power. Whether you have done this yourself or a boss or corporate headquarters is to blame, you will not be as productive or creative in such a position. There are things you can do, however, to remedy this if it’s your situation. One solution is to position a mirror or something highly reflective so that you see movement behind you. Sound can also signal an imminent interruption. A squeaky floorboard shouldn’t be fixed. A well place wind chime can signal movement.
It’s also important that your back be fairly close to a wall. It’s like having a contingent of warriors behind you. Some people sit with their back to a window. This is not a good idea either. Your two-year-old brain, also called the Lizard-Brain, sends signals without you conscious awareness. This part of your brain says, “Oh no! I could fall out!” Your more developed, more mature brain says, “Oh, come on. That’s not going to happen.” Unfortunately, the signal has already been sent to your immune system as a potential threat and has altered your body chemistry. Having a window behind you while you work is fine if it’s off to one side. It’s also easier to look out the window if it’s not directly behind you. Looking out a window is a wonderful way to increase creativity. The more distant the view, the more expansive you can be. The worst view would be a brick wall across an alley! Since what you see is what you’ll get, you may find yourself coming up against obstacles.
Altering your environment for better health is nothing new. Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing, experimented with manipulating hospital environments in the mid 1800’s. She promoted not only better cleanliness but also aesthetics knowing that it would have a positive effect on healing.
